Costa Rican Trade & Investment Board (CINDE)

"I can only offer the highest praise for your firm.  DCI set a total of 42 appointments with senior executives from companies like Hewlett-Packard, Cisco Systems, Oracle, Raychem and a range of smaller firms.  And best of all, five of these appointments resulted in companies actually visiting Costa Rica!"

The Challenge

Costa Rica had a highly educated workforce, but not enough high-paying jobs for its wealth of skilled citizens.  In order to offer a broader range of employment opportunities for this well-trained labor pool, the Costa Rican Trade and Investment Board worked with DCI to develop and execute a focused marketing campaign to help the country attract more electronics and high-tech manufacturers.

The DCI Roadmap

• Through a series of special events in key U.S. markets, especially those known for being high-tech hotbeds, bring Costa Rica's economic development team face to face with prospective investors and their advisors;

• Direct prospect missions to key U.S. markets and arrange one-on-one meetings with senior corporate executives with site selection responsibilities;

• Use favorable editorial placement in major business publications, highlighting Costa Rica's highly educated, well-trained workforce, to create the best possible climate in which to promote the location of executives and site selection advisors.

The Results

•  DCI directed a prospect luncheon and evening reception for 90 corporate executives in Silicon Valley, where Costa Rica's president and senior executives from Intel - which had recently made a $500 million investment in the country - were featured speakers.

• In key markets through the United States, DCI arranged prospect missions that resulted in more than 40 face-to-face meetings with targeted manufacturing companies.

• On behalf of CINDE, DCI landed a series of major stories in The Wall Street Journal, San Jose Mercury News, World Trade, Industry Week and the in-flight publication Continental, that reported the country's excellent business climate.

• DCI's efforts resulted in five companies visiting Costa Rica, two of which subsequently announced decisions to locate major operations in the country.
