AT WORK AT PLAY

Background

While director of public relations for the Government of Puerto Rico in 1960, Ted came up with the idea to launch Development Counsellors International, a unique organization that he envisioned helping developing regions within Africa, Asia and Latin America to attract both investors and tourists. (Nigeria and Thailand, for example, were among DCI’s first clients.) Although the company's focus has changed over the past 47 years, from supporting developing places to supporting cities, states, regions and countries, Ted’s vision of DCI - a specialty company that helps places attract investors and tourists -  remains the same.

Ted's Passion for Places

Ted has spent myriad hours on airplanes during the past 50 years and he has never found a place – from Tasmania to Jersey City – he didn’t find unique in one way or another. As someone who has made his livelihood and career out of working with cities, states, regions and countries, Ted has a passion for places that is insatiable. Whether brainstorming about a  media event for a client, or inventing a creative tagline for a city, Ted loves what his company does, and it's obvious to all those who meet him.

Notable Results

• Ted has published more than 100 articles on economic development and tourism, served as an advisor to the U.S. Department of Commerce and the United Nations, and developed a dozen place themelines from “Dayton (Ohio), the Innovation Location” to “Tacoma: America’s Number One Wired City.”

• He supervised arrangements for the marketing program on the original Toyota plant in Georgetown, Kentucky, the first foreign automobile facility in the United States, which also provided a significant economic boost to this town.

•  Ted played a key role in attracting the International Museum of Cartoon Art from Portchester, New York, to Palm Beach County, Florida, which quickly became the top tourism attraction in the area.

•  For Trinidad and Tobago, Ted, along with an architect, plotted where the tourism attractions, facilities and amenities should be located in the country for the best accessibility and visibility for visitors. When he returned 17 years later, Ted found almost all of these attractions in the exact locations he had suggested.
